Finding Good Columbian Coffee:
Columbian coffee is good and it requires little efforts to find one. Columbian coffee you shall not find in
Supremo or Excelso, which relate to the size of the bean or the screen size while grading.
Long back Columbian coffee was sold in two categories of Excelso and Supremo depending on the size of the bean in
contrast to Central American and South American coffees, which are graded; based on the altitudes the coffees are
grown.
Grading by the size of the screen has no sense in the light of the fact that a large bean does not mean good in
terms of cup quality. Cup quality is the main criteria of judging the quality of coffee.
The Columbian coffee, which has great cup character, depends upon the farm, from where it comes. There are pooled
varieties also from a specific region bearing the name of the region. Occasionally a generalized Columbian coffee
is a good coffee; it is not easy to locate a good coffee in the generalized Columbian coffee.
Coffee Market Trends:
There are changes taking place in the specialty coffee market. One can make selections of good coffee from micro
regions having small holding and discarding a large base of coffee producer, where the coffee cup obtained is not
up to the mark and grading system is followed keeping in view the size of the coffee beans.
We now have access to many more small farm-specific lots. One should be in a position to wait for good coffee and
not be in a hurry to buy Columbian coffee, when needed. One should be in a position to wait till peak of the
harvest has arrived.
Coffee from Colombia is available in all grade qualities suiting different markets like low grade for commercial
and food service outlets. Generic, medium grades, Specialty grades and placed at highest end of the Columbian
coffee range there are specific varieties and farm or micro-region varieties.
The latter has become available only since the last two years. Before this all varieties of coffee were pooled
together to make an exportable lot.
Very recently by trying cup quality of few of Columbian coffee has revealed there is a tendency favoring
aqua-pulp rapid milling technique. The purpose is to identify best Colombian coffee from the traditionally used
varieties and considering sourcing directly from farms and micro lots in the region.

88 point standard. The 86 and 87 point varieties are pooled together and are offered by its own cup quality
