The birth of coffee - Ethiopia
Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee, yet it isn't a land that springs to mind when the average shopper thinks
of coffee. The South Yank nations are way more associated with coffee production but coffee failed to come to these
nations till the early 1700's, virtually one thousand years after it was found. As legend has it, Ethiopian coffee
was originally discovered around six hundred A.D. By a young boy inclining goats.
It isn't known when the name coffee was applied to the weird plants but a fascinating legend places it around
900 A.D. Right after that coffee found its way across the Red Sea to Arabia and what's present day Yemen. Arabs
welcomed coffee and for nearly one thousand years were the only producers and exporters of the highly sought-after
product. Today Ethiopian coffee is specialty coffee and fave among connoisseurs around the globe.
It is famous for its smooth body, fragile astringency and pleasant flavour. The first Ethiopian coffee plant
that made its way to Yemen is claimed to be the plant that was propagated across the Arab world and cuttings were
ultimately transplanted into each main coffee growing area of the planet.
So, in a way Ethiopian coffee is in each can and each cup everywhere in some form or another.
Think about that next time you enjoy a cup of coffee.
